Description
The digitized microfilm collection of Mr. R. Kanagaratnam and Mrs. Pavalarany Kanagaratnam is a testament to their nearly six-decade-long dedication to preserving the political and cultural history of Eelam Tamils. Renowned for their contributions to modern Tamil archival history, Mr. Kanagaratnam and Mrs. Pavalarany meticulously gathered Tamil and English newspaper clippings and manuscripts, focusing on the historiography of Tamils across regions from the Fiji Islands to South Africa. Their efforts ensured the secure storage and microfilming of these invaluable documents outside the island. Spanning the years 1864 and 1899-2013, the collection includes more than 275 unique microfilm reels of textual records (16 mm and 35 mm) and 1.26 meters of textual records. Mr. and Mrs. Kanagaratnam's work was showcased at the 4th International Tamil Conference in Jaffna in 1974, and later in exhibitions in Canada (1996) and Norway (1997). Beyond their archival endeavors, they published numerous pamphlets highlighting the plight of Tamils in various countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Burma, and South Africa. Exiled in Tamil Nadu since 2008, Mr. and Mrs. Kanagaratnam witnessed the tragic events in Vanni from afar. This digitized collection represents approximately 65% of the microfilm (~230,000 pages) with work ongoing to make the entire collection available to the public.
